Funding Opportunities

Various scholarships and bursaries are available for postgraduate students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  Further information regarding scholarships and/or bursaries offered through the University, may be obtained from the University Financial Aid Office (Tel. 031-260-2231) located in the Shepstone Building, level 4, the Scholarships Office, or the relevant School and/or Faculty Offices.  For all scholarships and bursaries, application should be made as early as possible.  There are a wide variety of different kinds of funding available; students should consult with the relevant offices to determine which funding they should apply for.  Funding for postgraduate study is also available from the National Research Foundation (NRF).  Students should consult the NRF website (www.nrf.ac.za) for further information and application deadlines.

The Drama and Performance Studies programme is able, dependent on the funds annually available, to assist students who are studying the discipline.  The sources of such funds are the Alistair Calder Memorial Scholarship, Stanley Murphy Bursary, Phyllis Argo Memorial Fund, Lady Francis Smith Prize, and the Nina Cartwright Book Prize.  Students can apply for consideration to the Academic Co-ordinator of the Drama and Performance Studies programme before the end of the financial year for study in the following year.  The terms of these trusts require students to have both academic merit and financial need in order to be eligible for consideration.  Students who have displayed their ability and commitment would generally be given priority, as would those studying Drama and Performance Studies on the Howard College campus.  Please note that not every application may be successful, that the amount awarded may not cover fees, and that the date when the award is made varies.  To be considered for one of these awards, an application form must be completed in full, and submitted with the requested attachments.  This form can be obtained from the Drama Administrator and all information supplied will be treated in the strictest confidence.
